Process of Vacuum Metallizing

Metallization is a process that involves several processes including coating, metallizing, thermal spraying, vacuum metallizing, vacuum deposition, and metalation. Coating in metallization is used in enhancing appearance, adhesion and resistance to corrosion, wear and scratches through covering the surface of the object with another substance. Metalizing involves various processes used in treatment, coating or just combination with a metal. Heating or melting a substance then spraying it on the surface of the object is known as thermal metallization. A process, where organometallic compound which are metals having carbon atoms are reacted with organic compounds, is referred to as metalation. Placing very thin layers of a substance on an object in a vacuum is referred to as thermal deposition process. Vacuum chambers are used in the vacuum metalizing process where a metal coating is placed on an object.

Vacuum metalizing process is carried out in a vacuum chamber where the metal used in the coating is heated to its boiling point where the metal forms vapour. After vaporization, condensation follows and the metal particles settle on the surface of the object forming a metal coating. Heating the metal to its boiling point and vaporizing it is done in several processes including resistance heating, and electron beam. Electric currents are passed through the metal where they encounter resistance hence heating the metal in resistance heating. Heating the metal using electron beams involves using cathode rays which emit negative electrodes in a vacuum tube producing heat. Prevention of wear and tear of the objects, decorating the object and increasing the uses of an object such as through promoting the conductivity of poor electrical conductor objects are some of the purposes of vacuum metallizing objects.

There are various benefits of vacuum metalizing. Vacuum metalizing has little or no health effects on the users and it produces a uniform layer of polish on the surface of an object. This is mostly for vacuum metalizing processes that use very harmful and poisonous metals and other substances to carry out the coating. Vacuum metalizing helps in producing highly durable metals that are not likely to contact water as well as air which triggers rusting in metals. Vacuum metalizing is also an environmentally friendly process reducing the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere.

Measures to prevent any damage on the object should be adopted to ensure that the market value of the object is maintained. Burned parts on the objects indicated by some parts lacking the shiny silver luster, distinct colors on the object as a result of the metal coating being too thin and appearance of rainbow colors on the object may lower the quality of the object. Quality can be maintained by ensuring that all those problems likely to be experienced are prevented.
